Are Pets Allowed in the Manchester Student Accommodation?

Manchester Student Accommodation

The Slateyard in the city centre was the first to say YES to pet friendly student housing and has since been joined by lots of other stylish communities that have seen how much students love having their own furry friends around. It’s no surprise that this is the case – studies have shown that being with animals can relieve stress and boost your mood.

Some Manchester student apartments have taken things further, offering the chance to bring in dogs and cats for cuddle sessions, or even to live with you if it’s the right fit. This type of pet friendly housing can be found in lots of different kinds of buildings, ranging from a converted mill to stylish city centre apartments.

At the University of Bristol, for example, you are allowed to have fish that can fit humanely in a 20 gallon or smaller aquarium in your apartment. But you can also bring in a cat if you choose, and the university has a Puppy Lab programme that offers a chance to cuddle some adorable puppies for wellbeing purposes (although this is currently suspended due to Covid-19).

And at UCB, staff members are encouraged to register their dogs as therapy pets so they can visit students and staff in student buildings to help alleviate exam stress. One admin assistant at UCB brought her Yorkie to work and has noticed a big increase in stress relief and socialising between staff since then.

If you’re a student at MIT, for instance, you are allowed to have a small cat or dog in your Manchester student accommodation and the university has a Puppy Lab that runs various sessions to help with stress relief. The university also has Wags for Wellness, which lets students interact with a dog and ask questions about how to cope with stress or what to do when they feel anxious. The dog used for each session tends to be the same so you can build a bond if you’re looking for comfort.

In the UK, some landlords don’t allow pets at all, but you might find that some do if you look hard enough. For example, if you’re lucky enough to have secured a place in The Slateyard or other pet friendly student housing, the landlord will check that your pet is suitable for the property and will make sure you know the rules, which include keeping your animal on a lead when outside and keeping it in its own cage or carrier.
