Vintage and Contemporary Round Mattresses

Many consumers are unsure how to select a round mattress for beds that are sold in the same shape. Others are not even aware that a round bed exists! This style of bed first emerged as a distinctive and novel sleeping option in the 1960s, around the same time the waterbed became popular. Its futuristic look was first thought of as some kind of gimmick, seen on TV or in movies.

The round mattress became popular primarily in hotels and resorts until around 1968, when a round motorized, swiveling bed called the Lullaby began to appear in the bedrooms of those looking for something a little different to sleep on. It hit the rich and famous in Hollywood in a big way. Playboy magazine’s Hugh Hefner was often photographed in his round revolving bed, with a beautiful girl on either side of him. To be a member of the “crowd”, ownership of a round mattress was de rigueur and sales began to skyrocket.

the bond movies

Movies like the James Bond series and “In Like Flint” which featured round mattresses made even more people interested in owning one of these beautiful masterpieces. They represented luxury with a capital “L” during this period. These movie theater beds featured beautiful leather and luxurious velvet or satin headboards that also included lights. Some of these beds rotated, and quite a few also had a built-in vibrator that allowed the actors to enjoy a full-body massage while on camera.

Unfortunately, the round mattress began to be almost identical to certain types of shoddy movies and was also found in cheap motels that catered to a rather tacky crowd. Round beds slowly began to go out of fashion, in part because of these associations. Although they were still popular with some people, it became almost impossible to find a round mattress or bed, and those who were lucky enough to have a vintage round bed considered them a treasure.

The return

Recently, these mattresses have started to make a successful comeback. They are considered very “retro” and modern, and any naughty connotations associated with a round bed seem to be a thing of the past. Round mattresses are popular with young and old. They are bought today by people who already have a round bed or those who really wanted one back in the seventies. The revival of the round mattress is giving these people a chance to relive a pleasant time in their lives. There are even contemporary round mattresses made to fit baby beds, so the whole family can enjoy the comfort and style of this distinctive bedding choice.

A round mattress is usually sold in what is considered a “Super King” size, which measures 84 inches in diameter, with a thickness of about 10 inches. Available as an innerspring mattress or in luxurious memory foam, it’s a distinctive and fun way to add a different look to any member of your family’s bedroom.
