What States Do Not Allow Online Gambling?
While the federal government still hasn’t passed laws that would allow online gambling, the Department of Justice has begun to relax some of the federal restrictions. In June, the US Supreme Court overturned the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act and said that the federal ban on sports betting was not covered by the Wire Act. With more states allowing sports betting, the US Supreme Court could legalize online gambling in any state.
Another hurdle to legal sports betting is the absence of any state legislature. In the meantime, the state of Ohio, which has become a sports fanatic, is lagging behind its Midwestern neighbors in legalizing it. Legislation for online sports betting has been introduced in 2022 and is set to go to the governor’s desk. The state’s law prohibits gambling except for horse racing, and lawmakers don’t support the legalization of fantasy sports or online poker.
Delaware has a lottery-run sports betting market, but hasn’t opened its doors for online wagering. Although there are three retail sportsbooks in the state, their revenue numbers aren’t impressive. The small size of Delaware makes it a distant second. Meanwhile, in Florida, Hard Rock Interactive opened its first online sports betting site in early November. Nevertheless, the state’s federal judge struck down the Seminole Tribe’s agreement on online sports betting.
