Sonos Installation Guide

Like I said, Sonos can stream music to any room in your house. You get music from 4 different places, which are controlled by a Sonos Controller, iPod Touch/iPhone, or computer. As far as I know, apart from a pretty nifty Android app, there’s no other remote that can control it.

First, it plays music stored on your computer. We probably all have music on our computers, but most of us only play it through an MP3 player, which is a waste of music as far as I’m concerned. You spend a lot of time at home, but it’s not practical to use an MP3 player all the time, so why not free up the music on your computer? It will play ripped CDs that have been ripped on a computer or laptop and will play music that you purchase from online music services. In either case, the Sonos system only needs to have a normal local area network connection to connect wirelessly to the computer(s) where the music is stored.

Next Sonos can play Internet radio. These days, most radio stations have an online presence, so there are plenty to choose from. There are internet radio stations all over the world and they can all be found on Sonos. Radio stations can be searched by name, location, music, talk, and sports genres. You can even search for presenters and shows so you always find something interesting. Sonos reports that it has 100,000 Internet radio stations available.

Next Sonos has an analog connection available. This means it can be connected to anything from a TV to a satellite receiver to an MP3 player. Connecting Sonos to a video source has a slight limitation because there is a small audio delay from the line into the jacks and therefore voice is delayed. However, being able to have a local connection in every room allows you to connect the line-in jack to an Ipod or similar portable device, giving people access to home audio and their own music collection.

Finally, Sonos allows you to subscribe to online music providers and stream the song of your choice, anytime, in any room of your home. Now that’s the best part! For a small fee each month, you can have access to around 10,000,000 (ten million) tracks. There are a few providers, but the two largest claim around that amount. Once again, these clues can be searched for in many ways. All these tracks can now be turned into playlists and loop them whenever you want. Sonos can even wake you up in the morning to a playlist or radio station, or turn on radio shows as they’re about to start.

As for installation, a Sonos unit can be placed in the room or hidden entirely. One of the benefits of having the Sonos unit in the room is that you can easily access the line in socket and simple controls like volume and mute. If you hide it and need line access at the socket, you can connect to a connection point somewhere in the room. All you need is a pair of speakers or a home theater system with speakers to hook it up.

Speakers come in many different shapes and forms, such as bookshelf speakers, in-ceiling speakers, wall-mounted speakers, and home theater speakers and subwoofers. Sonos can connect to any of these, so it’s up to you to install the best speakers that work with your room design or budget.

All you need to do then is connect the Sonos system to your hands and start enjoying your favorite songs again.
