StarCraft II: the greatest game of all time?

Did you know that StarCraft 2 sold close to 6 million copies on Day 1 on the July 27, 2010 release date after being delayed for over 6 years? Of this amount, about 4 million copies were from South Korea alone, while the remaining 1.8 million were from the rest of the world (excluding China). Imagine how many players there are around the world and how many join these ranks every day. This is possibly the biggest game for at least the last 10 years, or the biggest game on any gaming platform to date.

It is a known fact that PC games that used to dominate personal games have lost substantial traction and interest with the rise of console games and recently even mobile games. So how come the greatest game of all time is only for PC? StarCraft 2 is one of these exceptions, and possibly a franchise that will continue to grow as a community and daily fan base. An important point to note is that StarCraft 1, originally released only in 1998, was still actively played even after more than 12 years from its initial release. The unofficial statistic is that there are at least 10 million users still for StarCraft 1 to this day.

So if you haven’t given this game a chance yet, what are you really waiting for? To give you a short summary, StarCraft 2 is labeled ‘RTS,’ which implies that you need not only quick reflexes, but also a good frame of mind to be able to multitask effectively. It offers various game modes, from single player campaign modes to custom user modes and finally competitive online multiplayer modes. The original game kept people busy for 12 years, I wonder how long StarCraft 2 will keep us at bay!

StarCraft 2 was released as ‘Wings of Liberty’ which mainly covers the history of the land race. The good news is that at least 2 more upcoming expansions are rumored to be called Legacy of the Void for the Protoss race and Heart of the Swarm for the Zerg race. The latter, Heart of the Swarm, is the next expansion to be released in late 2011, but don’t be too happy just yet. Although Blizzard Entertainment is well known for the quality of their games, they are also famous for their delayed release dates and the current history of pending Diablo 3 and World of Warcraft expansions are enough to give you a good idea of what to expect.

Even with that being the case, it would be interesting to see what this expansion brings to the gaming community and we are leaning towards the positive here.

StarCraft 2, like most games these days, tends to have “ learning curve ” requirements due to game complexity or improved user interface gameplay experiences and similarly separate game guides are available online to facilitate this process. The question is which of these guides is a good one to buy or use as there are so many out there not knowing if it is really worth your time.

If you choose to take some time to progress slowly, there are actually plenty of resource sites that give you the basics of the game, primarily StarCraft sites for fans and the community. However, if you plan to take your progress more seriously and be results-oriented, a guide would fit this purpose and you may want to consider reviewing one.
