Teaching English in Mexico: Teaching the English Language in Cancun Part 3

JOBS IN CANCUN:

Here are even MORE job opportunities…

In the last articles we talked about language schools and institutes. This article features bilingual schools, preschools, elementary schools, middle schools, and college preparatory schools that heavily emphasize English in their programs and are seriously seeking native English teachers for English and other classes. There are a considerable number of them due to the influence of tourism as the main industry in the area. So, polish your resume, have your diplomas apostilled, and dive right in.

Nursery, Kindergarten and Primary Schools:

All of these schools have students exclusively from kindergarten through elementary school, usually through about fifth grade (up to age 10 or 11). English is high on their curriculum and experienced native teachers have a really good chance of being hired. Although salary is generally commensurate with experience, some adjustments and “bonuses” are possible. Additional work is also available as tutoring for private students, parents, and family members. Most of the schools are quite small, with between 40 and 100 students maximum. The facilities vary a bit from one to another, but in general they are quite good by Mexican standards. Call, fax, email, post or write for the latest details and openings before making an appointment.

Touting itself as a 100% bilingual (Spanish-English) school, students here range from kindergarten to high school. This provides a good variety of opportunities for native English teachers, not only in English, but in other subjects as well. If you have a broad base in another subject, you might as well apply to teach that subject in English in addition to English classes. This option would make you much more valuable to the school and greatly increase your chances of getting hired. So be sure to prepare your resume and background materials accordingly to include anything from anthropology to carpentry. You never know what could be useful.

This school is amazing. Your preschool is bilingual (Spanish – English), your middle school students are trilingual, and your college prep students must be at least bilingual (usually Spanish – English). The possibilities here are staggering. The staff are multilingual, so you’ll likely be interviewed in English, but be sure to brush up on your Spanish, too. Remember, the students here are either bilingual or trilingual. You wouldn’t want to look “stupid” right now, would you? Be dynamic. Be open. Be flexible, and you’ll probably have a good chance of getting something here if you have a modicum of patience.
