Weird but useful travel items

Some items “live” in my suitcase, which means I never take them out. I have found them useful on many occasions, so they have gained permanent status in my bag.

Clothespins are the most practical things! It seems that I use them more often to close the curtains in hotels. Don’t they always seem to part precisely where the first rays of the sun will fall on your face while you sleep?

My stash of safety pins has saved the day more than once, rescuing me from missing buttons to torn hems. They are invaluable when it comes to creating the perfect outfit out of a sheet for that unexpected toga party!

Sensory comfort is derived from a small bottle of linen spray in my favorite scent, lavender. I always feel more at home when hotel sheets smell like home and the scent of lavender promotes relaxation and calm after a long day of running here and there seeing the sights.

Cheap rubber flip flops zip into an outside pocket of my carry-on for walks to the beach, pool, or just to let my feet breathe when heels come loose, whether on the flight or at the hotel. Sexy, they are not, but they are useful and often used.

Now that the airlines have decided that it could be dangerous if I try to carry my little Swiss Army knife in my bag, that has settled in my suitcase as well. It has small tweezers, a tiny flashlight and a blade suitable for cutting a block of cheese to snack on with some crackers and a glass of wine. However, I’d be in big trouble if I ever needed to defend myself with the two-inch blade!

When traveling by car there is more room for comfort. One of my favorite things to do is stop in the heat of the moment, maybe when something catches my eye that could make for a good photo or for a good view. Every time I stop by I always make time to make a fresh cup of coffee! I keep an old tin coffee pot and a single burner propane camp stove with a 1 pound propane cylinder in the back of the vehicle. It’s the perfect road trip.

These little conveniences have served me well over the years and since I never take them out of my bag, I never have to remember to pack them. Add your own favorite things to make your travels more comfortable, you’ll be glad you did.
